Can I watch the lesson?Absolutely! This is your choice. Some parent’s do and others make use of the time to do other duties in the house or garden. Some find that their child concentrates better when they are / or are not watching. Discuss this with your teacher if you are not sure. Remember though an adult must be on the premises whilst the lesson is being conducted.

I have watched a lesson and they seem to be playing. Are they learning anything? It has been proven that children learn best through play. Timid or nervous children enjoy the lessons more and will be happy and looking forward to the next one if they know how to play some of the repeated games. Staff have a repertoire of games that whilst the child enjoys playing, the game has a specific purpose in the learning of a new skill. As age and confidence develops more structured activities will be used.
-
What are my responsibilities in having a lesson at my home? The pool owner needs to ensure that the place of the lesson provides a safe working environment. This includes factors such as: * Pool temperature (ideally 28 -32 degrees) * Quality of water (regularly tested and on the day of the lesson) * The surrounding pool area is clear from obstructions * The pool meets council regulations in terms of a gate and fence.

What is the difference between the individual programme and the Swim and Survive Levels? Our philosophy at Star Skills Swimming is that we teach to the individual’s needs and not levels so that we maximise improvement in each stroke and water skills. However, we are registered with Royal Life Saving WA and can teach to and award their certificates on blocks of 5 lessons or more. Their levels are interchangeable with the Education Department so if your child is having lessons at school it is likely they are using these levels. We do find that children can get stuck at a level with one skill they can’t complete and therefore with some one on one tuition we can help them to complete this level, award the certificate and the child can move up when they get back to school lessons. Please feel free to ring and discuss your child’s needs if you are not sure. Find out more on Swim and Survive at Royal Life Saving WA.
-
Do you teach any age?Absolutely! Lessons can be given to babies through to adults. Lessons for under 3's are subject to availability of staff with this specific qualification and experience. We recommend under 2's are in the water with the carer to feel secure and develop confidence.

I have two or more children. Can they all have lessons at the same time?Lessons are aimed to suit your needs so yes this is possible. However, if one child is a non-swimmer, they must have one on one teaching for safety. Sometimes it works better to divide the lesson time slot between children and divide the time – so a 40min lesson divided into 2 x 20min. Either way we work together to find the best learning environment for your children.
-
My neighbour's / friend's children would like to join in. Is this possible?Yes. Lessons can be booked for up to 6 people and the costs can be shared.
-
How long will it take my child to swim? There is no magic rule or number of lessons. Like when children learn to walk or talk it all happens at different rates and ages. What we do know is that confidence built slowly and at the child’s pace remains with them and provides a solid basis for a faster transition to learning strokes.
-
How long are lessons?Lessons are for a minimum of 40 minutes. Popular times are 40 and 60 minute sessions, but we can arrange for longer sessions.
-
What qualification do teachers have? All teachers have a Swimming teachers certificate, Working with Children Check and First Aid qualification. In addition to this, we ensure that all teachers are friendly and professional and are able to get along with children.
-
Are Star Skills Swimming teachers insured?Yes. Star Skills Swimming is a registered business with comprehensive insurance. Teachers that do lessons under our umbrella are insured.
-
How do I contact my teacher?Your teacher’s mobile number will have been sent to you in your confirmation letter.
